✦ Fun Fact

Cranes are among the oldest living bird families. Fossil records of crane-like birds date back over 40 million years.

About

A majestic and very large bird. It is a symbol of wild wetlands. It is predominantly slate-grey with a long neck and a 'bustle' of feathers over its tail. The head has a black-and-white pattern with a red patch on the crown. Cranes migrate in massive, noisy V-formations between northern breeding grounds and southern wintering sites.

Behaviour

Cranes are known for spectacular dancing displays. They leap into the air, bow, and throw grass. They have a trumpeting call that can be heard for kilometres. They forage in fields and marshes for roots, seeds, and insects. They are very wary birds and fly at the slightest sign of approach.
