Look for the white forehead shield. Identify them by their black body, red eye, and the way they 'nod' their heads while swimming.

✦ Fun Fact

Coot chicks are very colorful. They have bright red heads and orange 'beards'. This appearance stimulates parents to feed them more frequently.

About

The Coot is a soot-black waterbird found on almost any freshwater body. It is easily identified by a white bill and a white 'frontal shield' on its forehead. It is a member of the rail family rather than a duck. Coots are highly adaptable. They are residents in most of Europe but move away from frozen waters in winter.

Behaviour

Coots are famously aggressive and territorial. They engage in 'splatter-fights' by slapping the water with their wings and using their large, lobed feet to drive away rivals. They dive for plants or graze on lawns. Their call is a series of loud, sharp 'tewk' sounds.
