Common Moorhen

A common waterbird of the rail family. It is found on almost any freshwater body, including small garden ponds. It is smaller than a Coot. It is identified by blackish plumage, a red bill with a yellow tip, and a white line on its flanks. It frequently flicks its tail to show white feathers. It is a resident in Europe and is very tolerant of humans.

Moorhens are excellent swimmers and often walk on lily pads. They have long green legs and very long toes. These help them walk on soft mud and floating plants. They eat plants, seeds, and insects. Their call is a distinctive, croaking 'kurr-uk'. Older siblings often help feed the chicks of the second brood.
