Red-necked Grebe

A medium-sized grebe. It is slightly bulkier and shorter-necked than the Great Crested Grebe. In summer, it has a rich red neck, a pale grey face, and a black cap. Its bill is dark with a prominent yellow base. It is a shy bird of vegetated lakes in Eastern and Northern Europe. In winter, it moves to coastal areas and takes on a muted grey-and-white appearance.

This species is secretive and often hides among reeds. They are highly territorial on breeding grounds. They emit loud, wailing grunts that sound like a braying donkey. Their diet includes fish, insects, and crustaceans. Like other grebes, it builds a floating nest anchored to plants.
