Look for the black rear end of the male. A brown duck that looks like a Mallard but has a white patch in the wing is a Gadwall.

✦ Fun Fact

Gadwalls regularly practise kleptoparasitism — they wait for Coots or diving ducks to bring up plants from the bottom and then snatch the food for themselves.

About

The Gadwall is a medium-sized dabbling duck that appears plain grey-brown at a distance. Close up, the male reveals an intricate, scale-like pattern on its feathers. It lives on freshwater lakes, gravel pits, and marshes with thick vegetation. It is a resident or short-distance migrant that has become increasingly common in Western Europe.

Behaviour

Gadwalls are quiet and shy birds. They feed primarily on aquatic plants. They often 'tip up' in the water to reach submerged vegetation. They are frequently seen in pairs rather than large flocks. A key identification feature is a small, brilliant white rectangular patch on the inner wing. This patch is visible in flight in both sexes.

Sexual Dimorphism

♂ Male

The male has a finely patterned grey body with a black rear end. His bill is dark and his head is a subtle sandy-brown.

♀ Female

Very similar to a female Mallard but smaller. She has a slimmer orange-sided bill and a distinctive white wing patch.
