European Robin

Perhaps Europe's most beloved garden bird. It is famous for its bright orange-red breast and large, dark eyes. It is a small, plump bird that is remarkably bold around humans. Robins often follow gardeners to snatch up earthworms disturbed by digging. They are very territorial toward their own kind.

Robins are among the first birds to sing in the morning and the last at night. They can even be heard singing under streetlights in winter. Their song is a beautiful, melancholic warble. Both males and females hold separate feeding territories in winter and defend them vigorously by puffing out their red breasts.
