Common Raven

The Raven is the largest crow and one of the most intelligent birds. It is a massive, all-black bird with a thick bill and shaggy 'beard' feathers on the throat. It lives in mountains, sea cliffs, and lowland forests. It is a long-lived species with a complex social life. In flight, it is as large as a buzzard and has a diamond-shaped tail.

Ravens are powerful, masterful fliers that often perform aerial acrobatics, such as barrel rolls or dives, appearing to do so simply for play. As highly intelligent omnivores and opportunistic scavengers, they have shown the ability to solve complex problems and even recognize individual human faces. They are social creatures that typically form strong, lifelong pair bonds. Their signature call is a resonant, deep, and guttural croak that carries over long distances.
