Sanderling

A small, plump wader known for its incredible speed. It is a master of the sandy shoreline. This high-arctic breeder winters along the coasts of Europe and Africa. In winter, it is the palest of all small waders and appears almost white. It lacks a hind toe. This unique feature helps it run more efficiently on firm sand.

Sanderlings are famous for 'chasing the waves'. They run down the beach following a receding wave to find food and sprint back before the next wave hits. They are almost never still. They form large flocks that move in perfect synchronization. Their flight is fast and low over the surf.
