Look for them on wide, sandy beaches. They are small and move very quickly. Watch for the 'broken' black neck-band that does not meet in the middle.

✦ Fun Fact

On extremely hot days, Kentish Plovers have been observed soaking their belly feathers in water and returning to their nests. The water helps cool the eggs, protecting them from overheating in the hot sand.

About

A small, pale wader of sandy beaches and salt lagoons. It has a thin black bill and long dark legs. Its sandy-grey upperparts provide perfect camouflage on the shoreline. It migrates to African and Mediterranean coasts for the winter. It needs undisturbed beaches to nest. Human coastal development is a major threat to this species.

Behaviour

It hunts with a 'run-and-stop' technique to snatch small insects from the sand. It is a ground-nester and lays eggs in simple scrapes decorated with pebbles or shells. If a predator approaches, adults perform a 'broken-wing' display. This trick leads the intruder away from the hidden eggs.

Sexual Dimorphism

♂ Male

Features a bright reddish-brown crown and a solid black bar on each side of the breast. It has a black band on the forehead above a white patch.

♀ Female

Duller than the male. The black markings are replaced by sandy-brown. The reddish tone on the crown is absent or very faint.
