Eurasian Skylark

The Skylark is a streaky brown bird of the open countryside. It is more often heard than seen. It has a small crest on its head that it can raise and a short tail with white outer feathers. Skylark's habitat includes European farmland, meadows, and heaths. This bird is famous for its extraordinary song. It delivers this song while hovering high in the sky, far above its nest.

The song-flight is its most famous behavior. The male rises almost vertically while singing a complex, continuous warble. He can stay suspended 50–100 metres high for several minutes. He then parachutes back down. On the ground, Skylarks walk or run rather than hop. They eat seeds and insects. In winter, they form large flocks in stubble fields to find grain.
