Common Pheasant

Originally from Asia, the Pheasant is now a widespread resident of European farmland and woods. It is a large, ground-dwelling bird. The male is spectacularly colorful, while the female is masterfully camouflaged. They are resident birds often seen feeding in fields or running across roads.

Pheasants prefer to run rather than fly when disturbed. If pressed, they take off with an explosive whirr of wings and a loud 'kok-kok' call. Males are highly territorial during breeding. They perform wing-whirring displays and 'crow' to attract females. They roost in trees at night to avoid foxes.
