Mute Swan

One of the heaviest flying birds in the world. It is an iconic resident of European lakes and rivers. It is distinguished by an orange bill with a black knob at the base. It typically holds its neck in a graceful 'S' curve. Though they appear serene, they are highly territorial birds. Wild populations now thrive across the continent.

Strongly territorial, Mute Swans will hiss, grunt, and bark when threatened. They are known for their dramatic 'busking' displays with arched wings. Their flight is characterized by a loud, rhythmic humming sound produced by their wingbeats. Primarily herbivorous, they spend much of their time grazing on aquatic plants and grass.
