Look for a 'tail-heavy' bird with a white throat popping up from brambles. Listen for the short, scratchy song.

✦ Fun Fact

Despite their small size, Common Whitethroats migrate thousands of kilometres each year, crossing the Sahara Desert to winter in sub-Saharan Africa.

About

A lively warbler of open country with thick hedges and brambles. It is a summer migrant that arrives in Europe from Africa in April. It has a long tail and reddish-brown wings. It is named for its bright white throat. It is an active bird that often performs a dancing song-flight over its territory.

Behaviour

The male is a persistent singer. He delivers a scratchy, hurried warble from the top of a hedge. When agitated, they raise their crown feathers into a small crest. They forage for insects but also eat berries in late summer. They depart for the south in autumn.

Sexual Dimorphism

♂ Male

Features a distinct slate-grey head and a warm, pinkish flush on the breast. The white throat is sharp and contrasting.

♀ Female

Duller than the male. It has a brownish head instead of grey. The pinkish tone on the breast is absent or very faint.
